I know I can’t be the only girl who watched the Golden Globes last week wishing I could look like those Hollywood ladies in a gown.  I’m not going to get all crazy and say the rest of us can look just like the stars – we all know they have a team of professionals in their back pockets.  We can, however, use little tricks to look our best in a bridesmaid dress, or any formal gown.

The secret?  Good undergarments.  Undergarments look funny without clothes on (hint: don’t try to use them to entice men), but they get the job done.

My favorites are Spanx.

They have every style under the moon – biker shorts, bras, slips, you name it.  And personally, I think it’s worth it to spend the extra money on the seamless Spanx.  They are more comfortable, squeeze it all in a little better, and there is no seam up the belly.

I learned this the hard way.  I wore the seam-up-the-belly biker shorts under a light purple chiffon dress.  Let’s just say it wasn’t a good situation, and I had to make sure I held my bridesmaid bouquet right where the seam was.

There are three undergarments to invest in for every dress.  Just buy them once – you can use all of these over and over…

·        Spanx – for smoothing the bum, belly, and back.

·        Dresser Cups – sewn into the bust of your dress.  They’re cheaper than a bra ($10-$15), comfortable, and invisible once your dress is on.  The first time my seamstress put these in a gown for me, I looked like I had an instant boob lift – I wanted to have them sewn into everything I own.

·        Hollywood Fashion Tape – holds fabric close to the skin, quick fixes hems, and can also hold together a low v-neck gown to      show a little less cleavage. One $7 box has lasted me over two years.

So get shopping and share this information with the rest of the bridal party – especially your bride!  Whether you’re a size 2 or 28, undergarments are simply a must. You’ll be happy you made the investment once the photos come back.
